Dénouement
Virginia Heffernan (an early fan of the series) has more on the “outing,” and the LA Times has an interview with the filmmakers. How the story will continue now that it’s definitively fictional is anyone’s guess, though it’s speculated that the videos will move to a creator-controlled site.
For the record, the filmmakers are Ramesh Flinders, Miles Beckett, and (to a lesser degree) Grant Steinfeld; the actress playing “Bree” is named Jessica Rose, real-world photos of whom can be seen here (there’s no hiding on the Internet).
Oh, and in true Hollywood fashion, there’s already a spinoff (that hints at a more horror-oriented direction for the storyline).
Sorry to disappoint, true believers.

I'm so lost on this. I feel behind in pop culture understanding---I checked out a few of her videos after your first post, but I don't understand what the controversy was or is. Could you give me more details?
Well, it's a bit of an overstatement to say there's really "controversy," except in the we've-really-got-nothing-better-to-do sense that entertainment battles thrive on.
In effect, the debate was around whether or not these were "real" (as they purported to be) or staged (either as a promotional gimmick or new filmmaking exercise). And then exactly who was actually behind it, and whether or not they had a specific agenda.
As it turns out, it's basically just an attempt at nontraditional storytelling. Taking advantage of new social-networking media to tell a story (though I question how well they used much other than the videos themselves).
